Ceasefire violation: Two soldiers martyred in firing by Pakistani troops in Sunderbani sector, J&K

NEW DELHI: Two soldiers were martyred in firing by Pakistani troops in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sunderbani sector along the Line of Control (LOC), Army officials said on Tuesday.

Pakistani soldiers used mortars and automatic gunfire overnight, in violation of the cease-fire, said Army spokesman Col. Nitin Joshi to AP news agency. He added that the Army retaliated “strongly and effectively” to Pakistan‘s unprovoked and indiscriminate firing and shelling.

The LOC remains extremely volatile, with ceasefire violations (CFVs) already jumping to over 400 in the first two months of this year.

If this trend continues-and it has shown no signs of ebbing as yet-then 2018 is likely to record the highest number of CFVs along the LoC in 15 years since the ceasefire along the 198-km international border in J&K, the 778-km line of control and the 110-km actual ground position line in Siachen came into force as a confidence-building measure between the two countries on November 26, 2003.
